This is Nour Maaz, I’m a Healthcare Management student in Spotlight, a scholarship offered by LASeR in partnership with Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) – USA to study from Lebanon with SNHU. I joined the Spotlight scholarship in 2019, almost 5 years after moving from Syria to Lebanon and I was able to get a lot of new opportunities.
I was chosen by SNHU GEM to participate in Larsen Lam ICONIQ Impact Award, a funding for initiatives that target refugees’ education and resettlement programs. I was chosen for my story and my public speaking and communication skills. I always love to participate in suck events because I love to spread awareness about refugees and their education and serve as an example of how investment in education can change someone’s life. I love to show the world that there are initiatives that provide the necessary support and help for students to succeed despite the difficulties.
In addition, I got the chance to talk about refugees during the RewirED event in Expo Dubai 2021 as a representative of LASeR, SNHU and the United Nations (UN). I shared my story with other vulnerable learners from different countries. I showed all attendees how investment in education changed my life and my family’s life. I believe that by participating in such events I’m helping other people too. I felt like I’m representing a lot of students that are struggling. Being in this position and speaking for a big number of vulnerable students was a huge accomplishment and responsibility. I learnt that I have to speak up and help others succeed and reach their goals and serve as a model for the donors to invest in such projects and programs.
These two opportunities showed me that as long as we’re working hard and striving to be better, all limitations will be gone! I do believe I’m not doing this for myself only, I’m doing it to help myself and others!
